Lambs Amid Wolves
"Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves." - Luke 10:3 NASB
Throughout history, the wolf has been considered a feared creature. These natural killers move with great speed, and they love to feast on vulnerable victims.
Traveling in packs, wolves communicate well with each other and have strong bonds. They are protective of their territory. They can sniff out danger and are ready to strike out against intruders. Also, they tend to move and hunt at night when their activities are hard to see.
Clearly, the disciples knew what Jesus meant when He said He was sending them out "as lambs in the midst of wolves." They were like lambs - innocent and pure, serving God, and praying for people's healing and restoration. But despite their noble mission, Jesus warned they would be surrounded by wolves.
This still applies to us today. If we follow Jesus, we, too, will be surrounded by wolves. They are constantly looking for our weaknesses, mistakes, and points of vulnerability. They can move with great speed and work together to attack us. They're ready to lash out and defend themselves. They can attack at any time or place, often when we're ill-prepared and least expect it. Rather than seeking our good, they seek to destroy us.
Our chief spiritual adversaries are Satan and his demons. But they inspire a whole army of wolves. Some of these operate in sheep's clothing, appearing as friends and colleagues (Matthew 7:15). Others may be "savage wolves [who] will come in among you, not sparing the flock" (Acts 20:29).
Today, remember that God wants you to be a lamb - innocent, pure, holy, and filled with faith. But never forget that wolves are all around you. Be alert and ready, strong in the Holy Spirit and set to fight back. Make sure you're "shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16). Instead of being ignorant of your enemy, be prepared...shrewd...and on the alert.
